Human Rights in Positive Support Group

At Positive Support Group (PSG) we firmly believe that our primary role is to promote quality of life for the people we support. This includes continuous collaboration with our clients to ensure that their human rights are upheld at all times.

What is the United Kingdom Human Rights Act?

The United Kingdom’s Human Rights Act (1998) outlines rules of how individuals must be treated by the Government. These are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to everyone, from birth to death. Human Rights ensure that all individuals are treated fairly, regardless personal characteristics such as race, gender, religion, disability etc.

What are the Human Rights?

Within the Human Rights Act, there are 16 Human Rights that individuals are entitled to. These include:

  • The right to life

  • The right to be free from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment

  • The right to be free from slavery or forced labour

  • The right to liberty

  • The right to a fair trial

  • The right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence

  • The right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion

Positive Support Group & Human Rights

All PSG services provide person-centred support to ensure that the individuals we support always come first. A big focus of our support is to get to know the person, whether this is through conversation with them, joining into their favourite activities, or working with key stakeholders who know the individual best. This provides PSG with information on what is important to the individual and helps us to tailor our support to benefit them the most.

PSG always work with the individual and their stakeholders to identify goals that are important to them and will be helpful to improve their quality of life. This can vary from support with emotion regulation, communication skills, getting a job, or building close relationships with others.

Alongside supporting individuals to achieve set goals, PSG also aim to increase clients’ and their stakeholders’ confidence to advocate for their needs to ensure they are active in shaping their support. By ensuring that individuals and stakeholders can effectively advocate for their needs, this minimises risks that their human rights are restricted or overlooked.
