PSG in the Media

Over 20,000 instances where autistic children required emergency care – a staggering 86% increase since 2019–20.

In recent weeks, Positive Support Group (PSG) has been featured in both The Times and HuffPost UK – highlighting a significant rise in emergency hospital admissions among autistic children. PSG’s analysis of NHS data reveals that in 2023-24, there were over 20,000 instances where autistic children requiredemergency care – a staggering 86% increase since 2019–20. This surge is attributed to insufficient community support and funding cuts, leading to hospital admissions without medical necessity.

Sarah Wakeling, PSG’s Chief Executive, emphasised the urgent need for early intervention and community-based mental health care to alleviate the pressure on NHS services. She stated, “These worrying figures underline the growing pressure on children’s mental health services – and the urgent need to rethink how we provide support for autistic children and their families.”

The articles also share personal stories, such as that of Becky, a mother whose daughter Sofia faced multiple crises due to autism-related distress. With PSG’s support, Sofia received tailored interventions that helped stabilise her condition – preventing further unnecessary hospital visits.

These features underscore PSG’s pivotal role in addressing the gaps in support for autistic children and advocating for systemic change to ensure timely and appropriate care.
